MECONIUM- FIRST STOOL

Meconium

This is the very first stool a baby makes either on the day of delivery or often times days after delivery. It is non smelling ,has a greenish-black colour with a sticky consistency which is made up of a combination of things ingested while the baby was in vitro such as amniotic fluid, mucus and skin cells . The colour of the stool will change afterwards due to the continuous intake of milk .

YELLOWISH AND SEEDY

 

As your baby continues to take breast milk , the colour and consistency of the stool changes to a light yellow colour , with smooth consistency and a mild smell . If it is darker than normal then it means a change on your diet .
FORMULA FED BABY

The look of a formula baby’s stool will definitely look different from a baby who is exclusively on breast milk. The colour is usually brownish .

INTRODUCTION TO SOLIDS

By the time you introduce your baby to solids, you will notice a change in the colour to greenish-brown . It looks like squashed avocado with a mushy consistency and it will be smelly.

DIARRHEA

When a baby has diarrhea , the stool is usually very loose , runny and the colour could either be yellow, green or brown consisting more of fluids . If this occurs for more than two days, then the child should be taken to the hospital.

CONSTIPATED

Once you notice your baby’s stool is hard and dry, looks like little pellets. This is an indication that your baby is constipated, your baby will show sign of distress or discomfort while attempting to pass stool in some cases there is little presence of blood in the stool .

INFECTION

When the stool is greenish and has streaks of mucus in it, this points to an infection or an allergic reaction to something. A doctor’s help should be sought .

MELENA OR BLACK STOOL

Melena

Hard and bloodied stool is an indication that blood has entered the intestines through the digestive system. A doctor should be sought immediately.
