Prenatal vitamins are designed of a special formulation of different nutrients that are able to support women through a healthy pregnancy and keep the baby safe. The main nutrients that are included in prenatal vitamins are folic acid, calcium, iron and zinc, which are the vitamins which will be our main focus .

FOLIC ACID

The most commonly found vitamin is folic acid also known as folate or Vitamin B9 which is thought to be highly important in the development of the foetus and helps to prevent fetal deformities .It helps with the production of red blood cells .Folic acid is generally prescribed to women before they even get pregnant, the Centre for disease Control (CDC) recommends that women take folic acid every day for at least a month before pregnancy, and every day while you are pregnant.

In addition to this, it is recommended that all women of childbearing age take folic acid every day. Taking folic acid reduces neural defects in babies by about 50%, such as Spina bifida which is the incomplete development of the spinal code and vertebrae or Anencephaly, an incomplete development of major parts of the brain in babies. The use of folic acid has also been known to prevent miscarriage, cleft lip and palate, low birth weight and premature birth.
A study also showed that women who took folic acid had reduced risks of pre-eclampsia, stroke and heart disease .It might interest you to know there are various foods that contain a rich amount of folic acid such as citrus fruits, leafy greens, beans, Okra beans, avocado and carrots.

CALCIUM

Calcium is very essential for the development and formation of strong bones and teeth in the growing child .It helps with nerve and muscle growth, for the woman it is particularly important since the child needs calcium for the formation of its skeletal frame and if this is not adequately provided by the mother it draws what is available from the mother’s bones.

Women with low calcium intake are at a high risk of developing osteoporosis which is the thinning of the bones. The National Academy of Sciences recommends that women who are pregnant or breastfeeding consume 1,000 mg (milligrams) of calcium each day. For pregnant teens, the recommended intake is even higher: 1,300 mg of calcium a day.
Foods rich in calcium include spinach, yogurt , skimmed milk , oranges ,sardines .
