According to the Mayo clinic , sudden infant death syndrome is the unexplained death , usually during sleep , of a seemingly healthy baby less than a year old . SIDS is sometimes known as crib death because the infants often die in their cribs .
This is the leading cause of death in babies under year old in the United States of America, about 3,500 babies are thought to have died in their sleep as a result of SIDS as reiterated by the Center for Disease Control ((CDC)
With such a high death rate, the cause is generally unknown, this has left researchers theorizing about the cause , it has no known symptoms and is undetectable.
The diagnosis for SIDS is that death is sudden , the baby does not cry or make any sound
Since there are no known symptoms, there are certain things you can do to prevent your child from being at risk ;
It is advised that each time a child is put to sleep on the stomach or side, that child is at risk of SIDS. These sleeping positions put a baby at risk of being smothered in the mattress or by the bedding. Put your baby to sleep on the back till about 6 months when the baby can rollover on his or her own and choose a comfortable sleeping position .
Co -sleeping is thought to be another factor putting the child at risk . As the child sleeps between both parents, the likely hood of one of them rolling over and suffocating the child during sleep is quite high .
The use of plush toys and pillows are thought to be another. To avoid suffocation or strangulation , the sleeping area of an infant should be clutter free and spacious .
Avoid smoking around babies, this puts them at a higher risk of SIDS, for women who smoked during pregnancy, their babies are three times more likely to die from SIDS.
Do not overdress your baby at night by piling on clothes on their little bodies, overheating may put them at risk. Wear only light and breathable clothes for them .Make sure to keep the temperature of the room conducive for an adult.
Honey should not be given to a child under a year old as research has show that there is a link between it and SIDS.
It is not all gloom and doom , surprisingly breastfeeding is encouraged as it reduces the risk of SIDS by as much as 50% .Why this happens is unknown? but it is believed that the breast milk protects babies from any infections that may put the at risk .
The use of a pacifier as well for a sleeping baby can also reduce the risk. Babies who are been breastfed should not be introduced to the pacifier till about 1 month . Put the pacifier in the mouth when the baby is awake and not when the baby is sleeping .
